Progress Bars work

One of the more interesting products I’ve had a chance to be a part of is the LinkedIn profile meter. This little progress bar, used across the digital world, is a simple solution to keep someone motivated & confident to complete difficult tasks.

When I wanted to motivate my kids to create some good habits around cleaning their room, I set up our own real-life progress bar. It worked!

Some key elements

  1. 7 tactile bars that can turn red to green (physically turning them red/green made a bit difference). Our goal was to get 5 of the 7 bars turned to green.

  2. A white board up front, so we can set expectations (do not fight with your brother)

  3. A white board at the end, to set the reward (ice cream)
